Event Description

Basic Public Information Officer Course (G-290)

This two-day course is intended for participants who deal with the media as part of their job (active Public Information Officers, Fire Chiefs, Police Chiefs, Emergency Management Directors or their deputies) . Its emphasis is on the basic skills and knowledge needed for emergency public information activities. Topics include the role of the PIO in emergency management (both day-to-day and during incidents or events), news release writing, conducting interviews with the media, and preparing officials to conduct interviews with the media.

Please be specific about your PIO duties and experience when writing your reasons for wanting to attend this course.

This course is a prerequisite for the Advanced Public Information Officer (E388) course at the Emergency Management Institute.

Target Audience Individuals who have public information responsibilities as their main job or as an auxiliary function at the Federal, State, or local levels of government. Selection for entry into this course will be based upon job title and responsibilities. 

To be considered for acceptance into the course, each individual must have a strong internet connection, a computer with microphone and webcam capabilities. Students are required to be in attendance through the entire course. Justifications will be carefully reviewed due to limited seats. Please articulate in the justification field your role with public information.


To ensure adequate participation of the target audience, all registrants will be placed on the waiting list pending approval. Due to limited seats, no more than one representative from each community will be enrolled.
