Autism Spectrum Disorder Training (CRHSAC)

An announcement on behalf of the Central Region Homeland Security Advisory Council (CRHSAC)...

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Training

The Central Region Homeland Security Council has partnered with the New England Center for Children to provide a three part training series at no cost to attendees. It is highly recommended that participants attend all three trainings.

Part One: An Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder

During the training participants will receive an introduction to ASD and build an understanding of the social/communication skill challenges and behavioral needs of people with this diagnosis. Discussion will also focus on the spectrum aspect of the autism spectrum and the variable abilities and independence individuals with ASD may have in navigating and interacting with others in their communities. Each training offering for part one is open to 100 people.

Part Two: Interacting with Individuals with ASD in Emergency Situations

Due to their social/communication skill challenges and behavioral needs individuals with ASD may have unexpected reactions in emergency situations and interactions with emergency service workers. This training will cover recommendations for interacting with individuals with ASD, communicating and  collaborating with guardians or caretakers (when available), and reactions emergency services workers may encounter from individuals with ASD in emergency situations. Strategies for effectively communicating with individuals with ASD during emergencies and for de-escalating an individual with ASD will also be discussed. Each training offering for part two is open to up to 20 people per session.

Part Three: Community Outreach to Support Individuals with ASD

This training session will focus on strategies emergency service organizations can utilize to foster relationships with individuals with ASD, their families, and the schools and agencies who serve this population in their local communities. This session will include strategies to develop awareness of individuals with ASD in the community and establishing relationships with individuals with ASD and their families. Recommendations for proactive safety considerations
families can take for emergency situations will also be discussed. Each training offering for part three is open to up to 20 people per session.
